‘ELEMENTS’

MICHAEL ORUCH & JAMES BOORSTEIN

MARCH 4 – 27 2016
Artists Reception Friday March 18 6 - 8pm

B-135 is pleased to have as its inaugural exhibition ‘Elements’ with Paintings by Michael Oruch and ‘Video Pictures’ by James Boorstein.
Both are NYC artists with wide ranging influences and long histories of making work.
While the work is diverse, both have a contemplative commonality that invites the viewer inward, to not only a place of quietude, but also of insight and illumination.

Michael Oruch will present a variety of Paintings executed in the past decade though most are recent and are being exhibited for the first time.

Oruch has had a studio on the Bowery for thirty years. He has a BFA in Drawing from the University of Iowa and an MFA in painting from Northwestern where he also taught alongside Ed Paschke. While he started out as a landscape orientated painter often working under the Brooklyn Bridge in the 70’s, he has exhibited as an abstract painter since 1978.
Out of an interest and experience with divination came the large group of paintings based on the I Ching. The first was painted in 2002. The most recent was finished this year. He has plans to make it a series of 9. The five large works on paper are from a series “ Summer Paintings” done in 2010. The small paintings mounted on panels are also on the linen paper, a size in which he is continually working. One of the largest series he has executed is the project of 108 paintings, entitled Mala which may be viewed on his website michaeloruch.com All the work reflects Oruchs’ interest in paint, color, energy, structure, a variety of ethnic influences and American painting.

James Boorstein will present a small assortment of Video Pictures, a brand new piece entitled: "100 Pictures" and introduce the "2017 Video Picture Calendar. "

Boorstein has had a studio in Chelsea for thirty years. He was trained as a cabinetmaker and sculptor, by the mid 1980s he had given up most formal studio work to focus on site specific installations. The current Video Pictures is an ongoing large body of work which grow out of printed photographs taken with a moving camera. Video Pictures (VP) contain qualities of video and photography. The work is meant to be seen in a fairly small format, intimately – one person at a time, like the experience of holding an old photograph in front of you.
